Merlo Rotos meet crane standards

Merlo has announced that all of its Roto telehandlers are now equipped to meet the new EN13000 crane standards.

Telehandler designers use a European Standard, EN 1459, to help comply with the requirements of the Machinery Directive but, at present, there is no dedicated European Standard for 360 degree telehandlers which are a combination of telehandler, crane and aerial work platform.

Until now, buyers have needed to specify ‘up-front’ if they want the hoist/crane or integrated work platform options. If not specified prior to build the machine could not be retrofitted with these items to the relevant standards of EN13000 and EN280.

The new Machinery Directive came into effect this year along with the revised crane standard EN 13000. The key change for this standard was the incorporation of an external key operated overload system override.

All Merlo Rotos manufactured after August 2010 have built to fully comply with EN 13000 (revised) and EN 280, if the appropriate Merlo attachment is fitted at a later date.

The earlier Roto MCSS models incorporated EN 13000 in their digital controls systems, so relatively few changes are needed to comply with the revised Standard. They include the safety system bypass switch outside of the cab, a timer to ensure that it will operate for only five minutes and an automatic speed reduction to 15 percent of the normal speed while overridden. The override action will also be recorded on the machines data-logger.

The ‘Simple’ Rotos, using the folding outriggers, such as the Roto 38.16 have been redesigned to incorporate much of the functionality of the MCSS models, utilising pressure-sensors on the outrigger pads and a new boom load sensor.
As with the MCSS models the simple units will also be factory fitted with the relevant equipment for later fitting of lifting equipment and integrated work platform.
