Application report: Hirschmann’s distribution partner DISA retrofits Bendini rail cranes

DISA Elektro AG is the Swiss distribution partner of Hirschmann Automation and Control GmbH. Mr Hansjörg Kneubühler (Head of Sales and Service, DISA AG) reports:

"One of our customers, the Swiss Rail Company (SBB), operates 41 Bendini rail cranes which have now become too old. SBB had to take action due to new standards and regulations. SBB had two alternatives up for discussion after their technical consultation with DISA: complete re-evaluation of the cranes or renewing the existing systems. The decision was made in favour of the latter. Why? The cranes are easy to use, inexpensive in their maintenance and very reliable in operation.

Retrofitting a fleet of 41 rail cranes is a big logistical challenge: extensive coordination with different suppliers, scheduling of assembly halls as well as the smooth decommissioning and re-commissioning of the machines which are used on SBB rail works – careful planning and consistent communication was of the utmost importance.

Over a period of 18 months, 41 machines will be successively retrofitted with diesel engines including particle filters. As of June 2009, DISA technicians are modifying the Bendini rail cranes with new load moment indicators, commissioning the cranes and carrying out maintenance work. The iVISOR mentor of Hirschmann Automation and Control GmbH is tasked with the reliable load moment indication. The geometry of the boom in relation to the operational weight on the hook is constantly monitored via angle sensors, hydraulic pressure transducers and configured control software. The control is connected via CAN-Bus. Safety first: The machine stops immediately as soon as the preset parameters are exceeded.”
